Black Lives Matter | Another World is Possible

Listen, I’m not going to pretend I have anything particularly unique to say about the murder of George Floyd by four policemen in Minneapolis last week. If you’re coming here for thoughts beyond the ordinary—well, there are likely better places to go, where you could listen to Black people whose lives have been directly impacted by police violence and brutality.

When it comes down to it, I’m just a white guy who sometimes cosplays as a writer, feeding text to the internet from a suburban bedroom. But this blog does—somehow—tend to get a few visitors here and there. I suppose it’s been around long enough for that to happen.

If you are one of those visitors, happen upon this post, and, like me, believe that the current order is brutal, unjust, and fundamentally broken—please understand that this is not the way things have to be.

Another world is possible.

Many people have delivered that line in its various shapes and forms, but I saw it most recently from journalist and creator Austin Walker, who you can follow on Twitter at @austin_walker. His work has been an inspiration to me for a long time.

If you take one thing away from this short message, I hope it’s this. Another world is possible. Please follow the link below and take action with me—help us make that other world not just possible, but reality.

Money is not going to do this alone. This is the minimum. If you have the means and ability to be part of a protest—do so. If you hold power in any kind of organization, use it to elevate Black voices. Involve yourselves with local government. Organize. Recruit.

But—if you do donate any money after reading this post, leave a comment (or send me a Twitter DM, @canonicalchris) with an image of your receipt for the amount and I’ll match anything to any of the organizations linked on that site up to $500. And if you don’t already, go follow Austin, and other Black writers, filmmakers, journalists, creators… and just people in general.

Hope to meet again, on kinder shores.
